Softball Suffers Loss to Adelphi in NCAA Opener, 4-1

BOX SCORE BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team suffered a 4-1 loss to Adelphi University in its opening game of the 2013 NCAA Division II East Region Softball Championship at LIU Post Friday afternoon. The Chargers fell behind 4-0 in the top of the second and couldn't rally in the final innings.

With the loss, New Haven fell to 36-14 on the season and advances in the losers bracket portion of the tournament to take on Dominican College in an elimination game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Adelphi improved to 39-17 with the win and moves on to take on LIU Post in the winners bracket tomorrow morning.

Adelphi opened scoring in the top of the first inning with one hit and one error on the Chargers. The Panthers left the bases loaded as UNH worked itself out of an early jam with allowing just one run. New Haven managed three base runners in the bottom of the first as well, but stranded three on base as well.

In the second, Adelphi took a larger lead with four hits and three runs, going ahead 4-0. New Haven's only run of the game came in the bottom of the second when Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) drove in Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) with a one-out, RBI-single to left field. UNH left another two runners on base as the final out was recorded in a strikeout.

Three-straight ground outs from Adelphi made for a quick top to the third inning. New Haven then put three runners on base with one out in the bottom of the third, but the Panthers turned a double play and got out of the inning without allowing a run.

Throughout the rest of the afternoon, UNH and Adelphi did not score another run. The Chargers left another six runners on base, including three in the bottom of the fourth. Adelphi left four on base in the final three innings, but played solid defense in the final innings to seal the victory.

Fisher and Dianno were two of three Chargers with hits in the loss. Fisher went 1-for-2 with a run and extra base hit. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) was the only other Charger with a hit, going 1-for-3 at the dish.

Starter Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) suffered the loss for UNH with four innings and three earned runs. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) pitched three scoreless innings in relief and struck out four batters.

New Haven, who plays Dominican tomorrow, met the other Chargers on April 9 and swept the doubleheader in Orangeburg, 5-3 and 4-2. Freshmen pitchers Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and Brittany Scott (Buena, N.J./Buena Regional) threw in both games for New Haven, with Scott earning both wins and King earning two saves.
