Softball Wins Again, Headed to NCAA East Region 1 Championship Final

BOX SCORE BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team completed its second win of the day as it held on for a 5-4 victory over host LIU Post in an elimination game in the NCAA Division II East Region 1 Championship tournament. With the victory, the Chargers advance to the championship final series against Adelphi University. New Haven will need to knock off the Panthers twice to earn a trip to its second NCAA Division II East Super Region Championship.

The Panthers and Chargers will get underway at 3:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon. If another game is necessary, the series will be completed on Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m.

New Haven jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Pioneers chipped away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Defense and pitching then carried the Chargers to their second elimination game victory in as many tries on Sunday.

Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) anchored the offense by going 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored. Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) and Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) also drove in runs with on hit each. Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) led the team with two runs scored.

In the circle, starter Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) went three 1/3 innings and allowed three earned runs off five hits. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) appeared in relief and earned her second win of the afternoon. She threw the final three 2/3 innings and fanned three, including the final batter of the game with the tying run on base.

New Haven improved to 38-14 overall and the Pioneers' season concludes with a record of 47-15.
