Softball Headed to NE-10 Semifinals Behind Stonesifer Complete Game

BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. - Senior pitcher Micah Stonesifer (Archer City, Texas/Archer City / Vernon College) threw a complete game and allowed no earned runs to lead the University of New Haven softball team to a 2-1 victory over Stonehill College in the Second Round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Thursday night. Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) provided the offensive spark and drove in the Chargers' go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single through the left side.

The Chargers advance to the NE-10 semifinals to take on Northeast Division No. 1 seed and host Southern New Hampshire University on Friday night at 7 p.m.

New Haven improved to 35-13 on the season, while the Skyhawks concluded their season at 25-25-1 overall.

Stonehill jumped out to the early lead, pulling ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. An error brought home the only run of the game for the Skyhawks with runners on first and second. New Haven immediately answered in the bottom of the first, with a run off one hit and one Stonehill error. Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) led off with a single to left field, while stealing second and advancing to third on a Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) sacrifice bunt. Couturier then drove in the game-tying run with a hard hit ball to second base.

Stonesifer fanned two and the Chargers retired the side in the top of the second. UNH stranded three runners on base in the bottom of the second and the game remained even at 1-1.

The teams exchanged positions in the third with Stonehill leaving two runners on base and the Chargers retired in order. The Chargers managed one base runner in the fourth, but the score remained the same and the game went into the fifth.

Stonehill put two runners on base with two outs, but Stonesifer earned the third out with her fifth strikeout of the game. Gelardi singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the fifth and would advance to third with a failed pickoff attempt at first base by Stonehill. Couturier drove in her second run of the day with a single throught the left side two batters later, giving the Chargers a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless sixth, New Haven needed just three more outs to advance to the semifinals. Stonesifer struck out the first batter in the seventh, while the second batter earned an infield single. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Stonehill's runner was thrown out at third with one out after over running the base on a single to the outfield. The Chargers earned the final out on a routine grounder to third base.

Gelardi went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Couturier went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Stonesifer earned her 16th win of the season and totaled eight strikeouts in the win.

The winner of Friday night's matchup, will advance to the NE-10 Softball Championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
