New Haven, Stonehill Women's Soccer Play to 1-1 Draw

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - After 110 minutes of action, the University of New Haven and Stonehill College women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Kayo Field.

New Haven moved to 5-0-3 overall and 3-0-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the tie. Extending its unbeaten streak to eight matches. The Skyhawks now stand at 3-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

New Haven's only goal of the evening came in the 10th minute when Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) netted her eighth of the season. The equalizer came in the 28th minute when Stonehill's Meagan Elliott scored off a penalty kick.

The Chargers tallied 10 shots on goal, with Stonehill's Amy Weaton recording eight saves. The Skyhawks also registerd 10 shots on goal with Natasha Purchla (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) recording nine saves. New Haven out-shot the Skyhawks 22-14, including 11-8 in the second half. The Chargers also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

With a 1-1 draw through the first 45 minutes, the Chargers and Skyhawks attempts to break the tie came up short. Back-to-back saves in the 85th minute by the Skyhawks kept the game tied at 1-1. In the final minute of regulation, Stonehill attempted a shot that was saved by Purchla and forcerd overtime.

New Haven's best opportunity of the overtime periods, which were mostly played in the midfield, came just minutes into the first extra session. Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) found herself on a breakaway opportunity with Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) and placed a low shot just wide right of the Skyhawks' net. The Chargers added three more shots which went wide or high in the final overtime period. Stonehill managed just one shot in the extra 20-minutes and never sustained a consistant attack.

The Chargers hit the road for a trio of Northeast-10 Conference contests over the next two weeks. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, UNH travels to nationally ranked American International and then to Merrimack on Saturday, Oct. 5. The final road trip of the series takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Southern Connecticut State. New Haven returns to Kayo Field on Saturday, Oct. 12 against Franklin Pierce.
