BOX SCORE CARY, N.C. – The University of New Haven baseball team received the first blemish on its 2014 schedule on Saturday evening with a 10-6 loss to Felician at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. Chris DeMorais went 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs batted in for the Chargers.
Â
With the loss, New Haven falls to 2-1 on the season while Felician improves to 7-9.
Â
Brendan O'Reilly scored twice and ripped an RBI triple for New Haven, which also got RBI off the bats of
Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) and
Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran).
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) went 2-for-4 from the nine slot in the lineup, and
Nick Nunziato (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added a double and a run scored.
Â
Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) started on the hill and took the loss in 4.1 innings of work.
Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) worked the middle 2.2 frames and
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) posted a zero in the ninth inning of his collegiate debut.
Â
Stephen Paladino earned the victory for Felician with 4.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.
Â
A three-run first inning staked the Golden Falcons to an early advantage, but New Haven took one run back in its half of the opening frame. O'Reilly led off the inning with a triple and dashed the final 90 feet on an RBI groundball off the bat of Johnson.
Felician posted three more runs in the second inning, but went quietly in the third as New Haven closed the gap with its own three-run frame.
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Johnson worked one-out walks to start things off, and both came home on DeMorais' three-bagger to left field. Lewicki's RBI groundout then plated the senior to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Â
The Golden Falcons tacked on an unearned run in the fourth inning, a tally in the seventh and two runs in the eighths as the Chargers' bats were silenced until the ninth frame.
Â
Nunziato led off the final inning with a double, and Walraven's infield hit put runners at the corners. O'Reilly scored Nunziato with a fielder's choice, beating out the potential double play as Walraven was retired at second base for the first out of the frame. Buckley then singled to move O'Reilly to third, and DeMorais knocked O'Reilly home two batters later to close the gap to 10-6 and keep the game alive with the two-out base-knock. However, after a walk to
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) pushed the potential tying run to the on-deck circle, Felician quelled the threat and shut the door on the 10-6 final.
Â
Today's game was the first of five East Region contests for the Chargers in Cary. The southern trip continues tomorrow with a 3 p.m. clash with Dowling. After a doubleheader with Caldwell and a single game against Molloy, New Haven returns north for Opening Day at Frank Vieira Field on Saturday, March 22. The home and Northeast-10 opener brings Assumption to West Haven for a noon twinbill.
