BOX SCORE 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of New Haven softball team walked off with a game one win and completed a sweep of Molloy behind Victoria Cabral's one-hitter on Sunday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. The Chargers' sweep of the defending NCAA East Region Champion Lions was a part of the NTC Spring Games.
Â
With the pair of victories, New Haven improves to 5-1 on the season, while Molloy drops to 1-3.
Â
Game 1
In game one,
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) and
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) each homered in the first inning to stake the Chargers to an early lead. Devlin would add another RBI, and
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) knocked in a run.
The Lions' offense came from Milan Botte, who hit a solo home run and a three-run shot as the contest was knotted at 4-4 entering the final frame.
Â
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) worked around a leadoff single to preserve the deadlock entering the bottom of the inning. Couturier was hit by a pitch with one out and replaced by
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) to jumpstart the offense. Fisher followed with a double to move Williams to third, and
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) brought the winning run home with a sacrifice fly to give New Haven a walk-off, 5-4 victory.
Â
King went the distance in the circle to improve to 3-0. She struck out three batters while ceding four runs on seven hits and one walk.
Â
Game 2
In the nightcap, only an infield hit separated
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) from a five-inning no-hitter. The sophomore ceded just the one hit along with two walks (one intentional) while striking out a pair to improve to 2-1.
Â
As Cabral continued to set down the Lions, all of the New Haven scoring came in back-to-back innings courtesy of a five-run third stanza and four-run fourth frame. The Chargers' nine-run, nine-hit attack was led by Spivey at 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and Cabral also had two hits apiece and each scored a run. DeLeo drove in two runs and scored two, while Fisher,
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) and
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each recorded an RBI.
Â
Though Molloy managed a hit in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions could not get on the scoreboard. Thus, the 9-0 tally proved final by way of the eight-run rule.
Â
New Haven will return to Winter Haven and resume play in the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow beginning at noon. The Chargers challenge Saint Cloud State followed by East Region opponent Caldwell in Monday's action. After an off-day, the Blue and Gold conclude their stay in Florida with four non-region contests back in Clermont.
Â
Opening day at the UNH Softball Field is also the Northeast-10 opener for the Chargers, who host Bentley in a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 22.
