Campbell Goal Lifts No. 13 Chargers Over No. 14 Pfeiffer, 10-8

BOX SCORE ARNOLD, Md. - With 5:51 left in the second half, junior Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) scored her second goal of the game to break an 8-8 tie and lift the nationally ranked No. 13 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory over No. 14 Pfeiffer on Sunday afternoon in Maryland on the campus of Anne Arundel Community College.

Just 50 seconds later Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) added an insurance goal to secure New Haven's fifth-straight win to open the 2014 season. It marks the fourth time in program history the Chargers have opened a season 5-0 and the second time in the last three years. The 2009 Chargers set the record for wins to open the season with nine consecutive. Pfeiffer dropped to 5-2 on the season with the loss.

Campbell finished with five points from a pair of goals and three assists, her fourth five-point game of the young 2014 season. Corinne Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) added a game-time three goals with one assist, while McKee matched her with three scores. Courtney Ackland (Perth, Western Australia/Churchlands) was the four Chargers with three points, contributing one goal and to assists. Nicole Belanger (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) rounded out scoring for UNH with one goal.

In addition, Campbell recorded four draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Marissa Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) led the team with five ground balls, while Corinne Fisher and Meredith Michel each tallied four ground balls. Corinne Fisher added two draw controls and two caused turnovers as well.

In goal, Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) tallied her fifth win of the season with three saves in the game.

New Haven held an 11-8 advantage in draw controls and a commanding 21-11 lead in ground balls. The Chargers also caused eight turnovers and Pfeiffer did not cause one turnover.

New Haven went down early in Sunday's game, on the short side of a 3-1 and 4-2 deficit late in the first period. Campbell and Ackland both scored in the final two minutes of the first half to cut the difference to just one at halftime. Trailing 4-3 at the break, the Chargers outscored the Falcons 7-4 in the second stanza to take the victory.

Corinne Fisher tied the game at 6-6 with 24:45 on the clock and 2:13 later, the Chargers took a 7-6 lead after a McKee goal. With 12:24 left, the game became tied once again at 8-8. After nearly seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse, Campbell broke the tie at 5:51 and McKee sealed the win at the 5:00 mark.

New Haven returns to action with another Northeast-10 Conference match against No. 7 Stonehill on Saturday, March 22 at Kayo Field. The Chargers will then hit the road for a trio of games at No. 9 Dowling, Bentley and No. 5 Le Moyne during a 10-day stretch.
