BOX SCORE CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of New Haven softball team capped its 2014 spring trip with a 5-0 win over Sioux Falls on Thursday evening at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) spun her second complete-game shutout of the season, while
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) and
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) each drove in two runs.
Â
With the win, the Chargers sweep their final day of competition in the Sunshine State to improve to 8-2 and match the club's best start since beginning the 2011 campaign with a 9-2 mark. Sioux Falls dropped to 12-4 after the loss.
Â
King spun seven shutout frames to improve to 5-0 on the season. She ceded just a pair of singles and issued one walk while racking up seven strikeouts in her 100-pitch complete game.
Â
Offensively Spivey went 3-for-4 with a two-run double, while Childs was 1-for-3 with a two-RBI base hit.
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had two hits to go along with a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt and a run scored. Freshmen
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) and
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) each added a hit and a run scored.
Â
A pair of errors plated the game's first run in the top of the fifth inning as Childs reached and took second on a fielding error. She was replaced by #Erika Williams, who came around to score on a misplayed groundball off the bat of
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks).
Â
Now staked to a 1-0 advantage, King pitched in and out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth frame. With runners on first and second and one down, the sophomore induced a 3-6 double play to maintain the one-run lead.
Â
Seeking insurance in the top of the sixth inning,
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) started the stanza with a walk. After taking second on a groundout, DeLeo singled to put runners on the corners. The second productive out of the inning moved DeLeo into scoring position, and Childs followed with two-out, two-run single to extend the New Haven advantage to 3-0.
The Chargers tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, jumpstarted by Devlin's leadoff double. Dianno then legged out a bunt single, and a
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) groundout moved her to second. With two outs in the frame, Spivey's third hit of the contest was her biggest as the junior ripped a double to plate Devlin and Dianno and push the lead to its eventual final of 5-0.
Â
New Haven takes to the UNH Softball Field for the first time this spring on Saturday, March 22 for a visit from Bentley. First pitch of the Northeast-10 Conference cross-divisional doubleheader is slated for noon.
