Chargers Best Minnesota-Crookston, 9-1, in Six Innings

BOX SCORE CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of New Haven softball team began the final day of its eight-game swing in Florida with a 9-1 victory over Minnesota-Crookston at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont. The Chargers got two RBI apiece from Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Ashley Chasse (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) and a one-hitter in the circle tossed by Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) in the six-inning triumph.

With the win, the Chargers improve to 7-2. The Golden Eagles from Crookston drop to 2-9.

Fisher went 2-for-3 to notch her two RBI, while Chasse drove in two runs with a single in her lone plate appearance of the day. Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, and eight other Chargers notched one hit in the victory.

Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) tripled and scored a run, and Cabral added an RBI double. Julieann Schneidenbach (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) had her first career hit and RBI to end the contest by way of the eight-run rule.

Cabral carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and finished with her second one-hitter of the spring to improve to 3-2. The reigning Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Week issued four walks and struck out three.

After a perfect top of the first inning for Cabral, the Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the opening frame. Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a pair of productive outs. With two down in the frame, Fisher delivered the RBI single through the left side to stake New Haven to an early 1-0 advantage.

A pair of one-out extra base hits led to the Chargers' second run as DeLeo smacked a one-out triple and Cabral helped her own cause with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning. New Haven added another tally when Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) legged out an infield single, and an error on the play allowed Cabral to race home and extend the cushion to 3-0.

The Chargers hung another crooked number in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Couturier led off with a double and scored on Fisher's second RBI single of the afternoon. Though Fisher was cut down attempting to take second base, the offense continued to roll as Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) walked and Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) doubled to put runners on second and third. DeLeo capitalized on the RBI opportunity with a sacrifice fly.

As Cabral continued to post zeroes, New Haven extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth frame. Williams led off the inning with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Another wild offering moved her to third base and Couturier moved her the final 60 feet to give the Chargers a 6-0 cushion.

The Golden Eagles would break-up the no-hitter and scratch out a run in the fifth inning, but Cabral bounced back with a 1-2-3 sixth, and the Chargers plated three to invoke the eight-run rule in the bottom of the inning. Kim Rodriguez (Southington, Conn./Southington) worked a pinch-hit, one-out walk to start the offense and moved to third a Childs double. Two batters later, Chasse followed with a single to plate both runners and Scheidenbach followed with an RBI single to end the contest with New Haven taking a 9-1 victory.

The Chargers will wrap up action in Florida this evening against Sioux Falls. New Haven's home and Northeast-10 opener is on Saturday at the UNH Softball Field; first pitch in the doubleheader against visiting Bentley is slated for noon.
