BOX SCORE 2 WEAST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team opened up their Northeast-10 Conference non-divisional schedule at home on Saturday afternoon against Bentley University. UNH dropped game one 2-1 before taking the nightcap 10-0 in six inning.
With the split, the Chargers are 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10. Bentley moves to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Â
GAME ONE
The first game featured many offensive chances for the Chargers, but they only plated one run.
Â
Back to back hits in the second inning from
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) got things rolling for UNH. However, a fly out and two straight fielder's choices ended the rally. The Chargers again threatened in the bottom half of the third after three singles from
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks),
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) and
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) loaded the bases. Chamoff was then forced out at home and Spivey hit into an inning ending 1-2-3 double play.
Â
Starting pitcher
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) got some defensive help of her own when she allowed a lead-off hit to start the fourth. After a fielder's choice got the force out a second, Sam Tierney lined into a 6-3 double play.
Â
After both teams were quiet in the fifth inning, the Falcons managed two runs in the sixth. Chelsea Vena walked and Laura McDonough reached on a fielder's choice to start off the inning. Clean up hitter Alex Borrelli then doubled down the left field line, scoring Vena. Tierney hit a one out, RBI single down the right field line, scoring McDonough.
Â
Courtney Reed (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) got a pinch-hit single to start off the bottom of the seventh for UNH and was replaced by pinch runner
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville). Palase would advance to second and then third on two fielder's choices, and would score the only run for the Chargers on a wild pitch.
Â
King threw a complete game allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out ten. Carly Taitz picked up the complete game win for the Falcons.
Eight different Chargers accounted for the team's eight hits.
Â
GAME TWO
Game two was a different story for the Chargers offense as they exploded for 10 runs, in part to a Spivey walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Like game one, both UNH and Bentley went scoreless into the fifth inning.
Â
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) singled and Palase sacrificed her over to start the bottom of the fifth. Nicole D'Andrea then had a pinch-hit single and advanced to second after DeLeo scored. Chamoff then hit a slow roller to third. She was able to beat the throw, but the first baseman dropped the ball allowing pinch runner
Ashley Chasse (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) to score from third and put the Chargers ahead 3-0.
Â
After allowing back-to-back two out hits in the top of the sixth, starting pitcher
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) was able to get her final out via a strike and throw out. Cabral carried a no-hitter into the fifth before a double broke it up. She scattered three hits over the complete game, striking out seven and walking none.
Â
The Chargers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, and scored runs 4 and 5 via walks. After a Bentley pitching change, Dianno singled up the middle, scoring Palase. Couturier fouled out before Spivey drilled a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence, bringing the score to 10-0 and ending the game.
The UNH bats were led by Spivey with four RBI, while Palase went 2-for-2 at the dish and DeLeo went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

New Haven returns to action Sunday, March 23 when it hosts a doubleheader against the Stonehill Skyhawks at 12 p.m. UNH will finish off their home stand Tuesday, March 25 against Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.Â
