Game One
The Chargers looked to score early in game one, but stranded runners at third base in each of the first three innings, including two in the third frame.
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) singled to start the bottom half of the third and advanced to second on a
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) base hit.
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Dianno out at second. A passed ball moved her to scoring position, but the Chargers were unable to manage a run.
Â
In the Skyhawks half of the fourth inning, Cassandra Squeri led off with a home run off UNH staring pitcher
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University). The run would be Stonehill's only of the game.
Â
Two singles in the bottom of the fourth inning looked to setup UNH for their first runs of the ball game, but again the Chargers were unable to score.
Â
UNH took advantage of a Skyhawk miscue in the fifth as Devlin reached on a throwing error and back-to-back singles by Dianno and Couturier loaded the bases. After a Stonehill pitching change,
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) drove in the first run for UNH as she hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Devlin from thrid.
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Dianno and giving the Chargers a 2-1 lead.
Â
New Haven would add an insurance run in the sixth when Cabral singled up the middle, scoring Palase from second.
Â
Cabral picked up her fifth win of the spring, as the sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing one earned run while striking out six and walking three. She added a RBI hit on the day.
Â
Game Two
The Chargers struck early and often in game two and
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) threw her third complete game shutout of the season.
Â
Dianno hit a one-out double down the right field line and advanced to third on a Couturier groundout. With Spivey up to bat, Dianno was able to score the deciding run on a passed ball.
Â
UNH took advantage of several Skyhawks errors in the third.
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) reached on a throwing error, advanced to second base and stole third.
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) hit an infield single and DeLeo remained at third base. After a strikeout,
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) knocked a two RBI triple into left field, driving in DeLeo and Palase. Devlin walked and stole second base before Dianno singled up the middle. Both Chamoff and Devlin scored on the play, pushing the Chargers lead to 5-0. Dianno stole second and scored the final New Haven run on a Couturier single.
Â
The rest of the game was all King, who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before it was broken up by Skyhawk pinch hitter Lianna Jordan. King struck out five and walked two in the 97-pitch effort, while improving to 6-1 on the season.
Â
Offensively on the day, the Chargers were lead by a pair of four hit performances from Palase and Dianno. The Chargers left fielder scored two runs, hit one of two UNH triples and assisted on a throw out at home plate. Dianno plated three runs, drove in two and hit a double.
Â
UNH will finish a six game home stand on Tuesday, March 25 as it hosts cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m for a NE-10 Southwest Division doubleheader.
