Couturier Becomes All-Time RBI Leader In 10-2 Victory; Game 2 Halted In Fifth

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 West Haven, Conn. - Entering today, University of New Haven softball student-athlete Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) needed three RBI to become the all-time leader in program history. The senior got that and more, going 2-for-5 at the dish with four RBI to bring her career total to 126. She passed Christina Gelardi (Derby, Conn./Derby) and Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) for the top spot. Her performance led the Chargers to a 10-2 victory over American International College in game one of the scheduled doubleheader at the UNH Softball Field.

After being halted in the top of the fifth inning in West Haven, game two was resumed on Thursday, April 3 in Springfield, Mass. The Chargers eventually fell 5-4 when the game was completed at Judy Groff Field.

With their seventh-straight victory, the Chargers move to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-10 and 0-1 in the conference.

Game One
New Haven struck early in the first as Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) bunted down the third base line. Dianno forced a wild throw to first base and trucked all 240 feet on the base paths to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. AIC tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

The Blue and Gold took the lead for good in the third when Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) led off with a walk and Dianno beat out an infield single. Couturier reached on one of four Yellow Jacket errors in the game, loading the bases. Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) drove a 1-0 pitch up the middle to score Devlin and Dianno, and give the Chargers a two-run advantage.

UNH tacked on three more in the fourth as pitcher Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) singled up the middle and Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) reached on a sacrifice bunt. Chamoff stole second and Devlin forced a walk to load the bases. Dianno was hit with an 0-2 pitch, bringing home Cabral. Couturier followed with an RBI ground out to short to bring the score to 5-1. After a Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) hit by pitch loaded the bases again for the Chargers, Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) worked an RBI walk, bringing in Devlin and giving New Haven a 6-1 lead.

AIC threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but Cabral limited the damage by allowing a run and leaving the bases loaded.

UNH put another crooked number on the board in the fifth. Just like the fourth inning, Cabral led off with a single and Chamoff reached on a bunt. After an AIC pitching change, Couturier ripped a double to left center, scoring Devlin and Chamoff. The two RBI double placed Couturier as the sole RBI leader in UNH program history. After a Spivey walk, Fisher drove a 2-2 pitch into left field, scoring Couturier.

Cabral pitched a perfect fifth inning, striking out the side and threw another zero in the sixth.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Couturier hammered the first pitch she saw over the fence in center field, capping the scoring at 10-2. The home run was Couturier's fourth of the season.

Cabral finished out her seventh win of the season, as the sophomore pitched five and two-thirds innings, in relief of starting pitcher Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County). She allowed one run, one walk and struck out nine.

Game Two
The Yellow Jackets were the first to strike in game two by plating three runs in the bottom of the opening inning. The Chargers were retired in order in both the second and third innings as the three-run deficit carried into the fourth for UNH.

Dianno started a rally in the fourth with a lead off triple to right center. Couturier then drove in New Haven's first run of the game with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Ashley Chasse (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) later scored on an error by the shortstop to bring the score to 3-2 at the midway point of the fourth inning.

After a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the game was halted due to rain at the UNH Softball Field. The game resumed on Thursday, April 3 in Springfield, Mass. at Judy Groff Field.

New Haven went hitless in the top of the fifth, while the Yellow Jackets used two hits and one UNH error to add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Chargers added two more runs in the top of the sixth with a Spivey sacrifice fly to score Dianno. Fisher then hammered a solo homerun to bring the AIC lead back within one run after the top of the sixth.

The five-pitch bottom of the sixth by King brought the game to the seventh and final inning. The Chargers were retired in order as the Yellow Jackets secured their fourth win of the season.

Over the two days the game was played, Dianno went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Fisher went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun. Cabral suffered the loss with one and one-third innings pitched, while King went four and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts and two earned runs.

Additionally, the scheduled doubleheader against Georgian Court on Sunday, March 30 has been postponed to a date and time yet to be determined. The Blue and Gold are also scheduled to be back in conference action when they travel to Pace on Wednesday, April 2. First pitch of the doubleheader scheduled at 3 p.m.
