No. 11 Caldwell Takes Two from Charger Softball, 1-0 and 4-2

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities, dropping a non-conference, East Region doubleheader to No. 11 Caldwell by scores of 1-0 and 4-2. Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in the nightcap.

After today's action, the Chargers fall to 20-9 on the season. The Cougars, who are the frontrunners in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, improve to 23-3.

New Haven pitching surrendered just one earned run in the doubleheader, with four unearned tallies crossing the plate for Caldwell. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) started both contests, totaling 8.1 innings of work with one earned run allowed on six hits and four walks. She took the hard-luck loss in game two, falling to 11-5.

Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) came out of the bullpen in each game, allowing only two unearned runs in a combined 5.2 frames of action. She allowed five hits and two walks, dropping to 9-4 after the game one loss.

The lone run in the opening game crossed the plate in the top of the seventh inning, as Rebecca Welch raced home on a passed ball.

Fisher had both RBI for the Chargers in the nightcap, knocking in Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) with an RBI double in the first inning and leading off the fourth frame with her eighth home run of the season.

Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School), Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) each doubled in game two, with Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) tallying a stolen base. Palase was 2-for-2 at the dish and also dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt.

In the second game, the Cougars scored on run in the top of the second inning on a delayed double steal, plated two via an error with two down in the third and – for their lone RBI of the afternoon – Kristen Knorr roped a fourth-inning RBI double to knock in another unearned tally.

Amber Padilla starred on the mound in both games for Caldwell. After firing a complete game shutout in the opener to improve to 8-2, she worked the final three innings of the nightcap to record the save. Hanna Walkinshaw started the second game to remain unbeaten at 7-0.
