BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team split a pivotal Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Le Moyne College. The Chargers dropped game one 2-0 before rebounding in game two 5-0. With the split, UNH is 21-10 overall and 13-6 in the NE-10. The Dolphins move to 19-11 and 10-4 in the conference action.
Game 1The first game had a total of four hits and two runs in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel between New Haven starter
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) and Le Moyne ace Sarah Harrison.
New Haven threatened in the first with a leadoff walk by
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and a one-out free pass issued
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional), but both were left stranded.
King was solid as she struckout five of the first six batters she faced. She ended with eight whiffs in the game.
Neither team was able to get the bats going throughout the game;
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) picked up the Chargers' first hit with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Le Moyne scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh, plating unearned tallies on a throwing error and a RBI single.
King (11-6) took the loss, giving up just the two unearned runs in the complete game effort.
Game 2The UNH bats came alive in the second game, and
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) threw her fifth complete game shutout of the season in the 5-0 victory.
The game had the same feel as game one did with both teams held scoreless through three innings. Back-to-back one-out singles from Couturier and
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) got things going for UNH in the bottom of the fourth.
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) drilled a 2-1 pitch into right center scoring pinch-runner
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) and Fisher. Then pinch-hitter
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) hit an RBI single down the left field line, scoring DeLeo.
That was all Cabral (10-4) needed, as she gave up just three hits, fanning seven and walking three.
The Blue and Gold tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth stanza. Spivey was hit with her team leading 16th pitch of the spring to start off the inning, and
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) advanced her to second. After a fly out, Fisher hit a 3-2 pitch through the left side, plating Spivey. Then, DeLeo managed a clutch two-out RBI single, capping the UNH scoring.
Cabral finished out the complete game by striking out the side in the seventh.
DeLeo led the Chargers offense, driving in three runs and scoring one. Fisher and Childs each recorded RBI hits in the doubleheader.
The Chargers will finish out the three game home series with Le Moyne on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
