Chargers Walk-Off with Home Sweep of Concordia

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – An extra-inning, RBI single from Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) completed a Sunday sweep for the University of New Haven baseball team over visiting Concordia. The Chargers took the non-conference, East Region twin bill by scores of 11-3 and 5-4.

After the sweep, New Haven improves to 11-8 on the season. The Clippers drop to 6-17.

In the doubleheader, Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) led the Chargers offensively with three runs batted in apiece. Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) each had five hits, with Johnson and Cullen each knocked in two runs. In total, 10 Chargers had at least one hit in the twin bill and eight had at least one RBI.

Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) started game one on the mound, earning the win to improve to 2-1. The southpaw scattered five singles and two walks in six shutout innings while striking out five. The victory in the nightcap was the first career win for Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning to facilitate the Chargers' walk-off win. John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) started on the mound and worked the first six innings, and Buckley got the next five outs for the Blue and Gold.

Game 1
The Chargers started the scoring without the benefit of a base-hit in the bottom of the second inning. Buckley led off the frame with a walk, stole second and advanced to third as the catcher's throw sailed into centerfield. After TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) was issued a free pass, Buckley raced the final 90 feet as Cullen beat out a double-play ball to earn the RBI and put New Haven on top, 1-0.

After another scoreless frame by Royer, the Blue and Gold broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Walraven led off with an infield single and moved into scoreless position on an errant throw. Johnson followed with an RBI single back up the middle, running the advantage to 2-0. After a four-pitch walk to DeMorais, a base-hit by Collett plated Johnson and an error on the play scored DeMorais. Riccio capped the scoring with a base-knock to plate Collett.

A two-run single for DeMorais in the fourth and an RBI hit for Walraven in the fifth increased the margin to 8-0 as Royer completed his six innings of shutout ball.

The Clippers got on the board against the Chargers' bullpen with three runs in the top of the seventh, but New Haven answered in kind in the home half. The final three runs of the afternoon crossed the plate on a Johnson RBI base-hit, a bases-loaded walk issued to Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and a passed ball that rounded out the final score at 11-3.

Johnson went 4-for-6 with two RBI and a stolen base in the opener. DeMorais also drove in two runs, batting 1-for-2 with three walks.

Following Royer's strong start, Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) pitched the seventh inning, with scoreless frames from Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Taylor Hughes (Nantucket, Mass./Nantucket / Bridgton Academy) completing the effort on the mound.

The loss went to Concordia's Ian Cole (0-1), who started for the Clippers and was charged with five runs (three earned) on four this and five walks in 2.2 innings of action.

Game 2
New Haven needed a comeback to take the game two win, which was scheduled for seven innings.

Concordia scored one run in the top of the first inning and added a pair of unearned tallies in the third frame to claim a 3-0 advantage.

The Chargers got on the board and pulled to within one in the bottom of the fourth. Johnson started the offense with a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch. Brendan O'Reilly then walked and, after the second out of the inning, Buckley singled to load the bases. Collett delivered on the two-out RBI opportunity, dropping a single into left centerfield to plate both Johnson and O'Reilly to trim the margin to 3-2.

A run in the bottom of the sixth inning pulled the Chargers even at 3-3. O'Reilly led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a DeMorais groundout. Buckley followed with a single into left field to push across the tying run.

Buckley then fired a perfect seventh, and Concordia turned a potential game-winning line drive into a double play in the bottom half of the frame to send the contest into extra innings.

The Clippers struck in the visitors' half of the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI single from Raul Gonzalez with two down. Concordia had a chance to add to its new-found lead, but Aprea came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded and induced a lazy flyball to DeMorais in right field to retire the side.

Three outs from defeat, O'Reilly jumpstarted the New Haven offense with a leadoff walk in the home half and swiped second base for the second time in the game. With a runner now in scoring position, DeMorais capitalized with a single up the middle to plate O'Reilly and knot the contest at 4-4. After Buckley walked, Collett lofted a flyball to right field to move DeMorais over to third. Cullen then delivered the game-winning hit, sending a 1-1 pitch through the left side of the infield to score the winning run in a 5-4, extra-inning triumph.

O'Reilly reached safely in all four of his plate appearances in the nightcap, batting 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored. Walraven and Buckley also had two hits apiece.

Melville allowed one earned run on six hits and two walks in his six frames of work. The tall right-hander racked up seven strikeouts in the no-decision performance. Buckley allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts, and Aprea retired the only batter he faced to claim the individual win on the bump.

New Haven baseball and softball also celebrated Armed Forces Day in conjunction with their games this afternoon. The national anthem was performed by five members of the University of New Haven Marching Band with the colors presented by members of New Haven ROTC. Wladyslaw Drag, a United State Navy veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm, threw out the first pitch at Frank Vieira Field. Drag is the father of New Haven student-athlete Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.). Both the baseball and softball teams unveiled new blue and gold camouflage uniforms.

The Chargers resume Northeast-10 Southwest Division play on Tuesday, April 15 with a 3:30 p.m. trip to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. Action returns to Frank Vieira Field on Wednesday, April 16 for a 3:30 p.m. visit from non-conference opponent Molloy.
