Cabral Hits, Pitches Chargers to Sweep of Panthers

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) had a career day, in the box and circle, as she led the University of New Havne softball team to a two game sweep of Adelphi 9-1 and 2-0. With the victories, the Chargers improve to 23-11 overall and 15-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Panthers fall to 18-13 and 9-5 in conference play.

GAME ONE
The Panthers looked to get on the board early in the first, but New Haven starter Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) was able to battle out of a two runner situation. Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) wasted no time in the bottom half, as the freshman shortstop drilled a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for her fifth roundtripper of the season. UNH added their second run on a pinch-hit RBI fielders choice by Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) in the second.

Coming into the game, the Blue and Gold scored 29 runs in the third inning, the most of any inning this season. They would add to that total as Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) led off with a single up the middle, followed by a towering homerun by Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional). The four bagger was the senior's tenth of the season, making her the second Charger in program history with ten-plus homeruns in a season. She joins Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour), who hit 12 in 2010, in that catagory. Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) followed up with her 17th hit by pitch. Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) moved Spivey to second on a fielders choice. Cabral got her first hit of the game, as she took a 3-2 pitch the other way to right field, scoring Spivey. Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) followed with a walk and Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) hit a soft line drive to short, which was booted, scoring Cabral. Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) capped the five run inning with a two-out, two RBI triple to left field to bring the score to 7-0.

The Panthers broke the King shutout in the forth, plating a run. King (12-6) allowed the one run in five innings of work, while striking out three and yielding six walks.

The Chargers added the final two run in the bottom of the fifth as Cabral led off with a single and Palase singled down the leftfield line. DeLeo then singled up the middle, scoring pinch-runner Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) from second and Palase from first. The game ended via the eight run rule.

In game one, Devlin went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run, while Couturier drove in two and scored one off her homerun. DeLeo when 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Cabral went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run as Chamoff went 1-for-1 with a pair of RBI.

GAME TWO
The two lone runs of the game were plated in the second inning as Cabral led off with a double to left center. DeLeo singled through the left side, advancing Cabral to third. DeLeo would then steal second before Devlin hammered a two-out, two RBI double to left field.

That was all the run support Cabral needed as she flirted with a perfect game and a no-hitter. Cabral retired the first 17 batters before yeilding a two-out walk in the sixth and gave up back-to-back singles in the seventh. A game ending double play finished the two-hit shutout for Cabral.

Cabral (11-5) fired her sixth complete game shutout of the season, allowing two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. She also reached base on five of six plate apperances, going 4-for-5 and walking once in the doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Devlin tallied a hit and two RBI, while DeLeo wnet 2-for-3 with a run.

With its eight-game homestand now complete, New Haven will go on the road for five, starting with a three-game weekend series against Saint Rose on Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19. The Chargers then travel to Adelphi on Tuesday, April 22 for a doubleheader before finishing off their season at home with two games against LIU Post on April 24, and the regular season finale meeting against Dominican on April 27.
