BOX SCORE 2 ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team split a pair of extra-inning games Saturday afternoon at the College of Saint Rose. The Chargers took game one 3-1 in eight innings, while the Golden Knights took the nightcap 7-6 in 10 innings.
With the split, New Haven moves to 25-12 overall, 17-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference and 11-6 in the NE-10 Southwest Division. Saint Rose now stands at 9-20 overall, 5-12 in conference play and 4-9 in divisional action.
GAME ONEA scoreless first led to a one-out walk by
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) in the top of the second. After a pair of singles to third base by
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and
Meg Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks), the Chargers had bases loaded with two outs for
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School). The rookie took a single to left field and drove in the game's first run.
After striking out two of three batters in the second, UNH starter
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) surrendered a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third. The Golden Knights successfully advanced the runner and a single to right field evened the score at 1-1 after three.
The game was then a pitcher's duel through the end of regular innings. Each team left two runners on base during the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning, but neither team recorded a run.
In the top of the eighth, UNH used two hits to score a pair of runs.
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) led off the inning with an infield single and then
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) put down a sacrifice to advance the runner.
Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) stepped to the plate and hit a two-RBI homerun to take a two-run lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Saint Rose put the leadoff runner one base with a single, but King worked out of the jam and a line drive to Spivey ended the game after one extra inning.
King went the complete game for her 13th win of the season. She threw six strikeouts, while allowing three hits, one earned run and three walks.
At the plate, Spivey went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run off her homerun in the eighth. Devlin went 1-for-3 with a RBI, while Chamoff went 2-for-3 in the nine spot. Dianno and Cabral both scored a run in the win as well.
GAME TWOWith no runs in the first, New Haven opened scoring in the top of the second inning. The Chargers used three hits, from Cabral,
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) and
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) to plate one run and take an early lead. Childs recorded the two-out RBI single to right field, scoring Cabral.
In the top of the fifth, the Chargers took a 2-0 lead with a Couturier two-out RBI double to right center. She drove in Dianno from first and the Chargers held a two run advantage. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Saint Rose plated its first run of the nightcap. The Golden Knights managed two hits and left two runners on base, while bringing the score to 2-1.
After UNH left two runners on in the top of the sixth, Saint Rose used two hits and a walk to score the game-tying run off a two-out RBI infield single. The Chargers got out of the inning with two runners on and stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh.
Couturier singled to right center with one out and the Chargers' bats came alive.
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) reached on an error at shortstop as pinch runner
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) crossed home plate to put the Chargers ahead 3-2 with one out. Later in the inning,
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) knocked a double down the left field line and drove in both Fisher and pinch runner
Ashley Chasse (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) for a 5-2 Charger lead. The last run of the inning was driving in by
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) who singled to center field to score Palase.
New Haven's four-run, 6-2 lead would vanish in the bottom of the seventh. Four Saint Rose hits, including a three-RBI homerun by Amber Loussedes, scored four runs and once again tied the game at 6-6 after regulation.
Despite the Chargers stranding two runners on base in the top of the eight, neither team managed runs until a walk-off RBI single to right field was hit by Saint Rose's Anna Carey in the bottom of the 10th inning.
Palase led the UNH bats with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Couturier went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Chamoff and Childs also drove in runs.
Cabral suffered the loss, throwing eight and one-third innings with five strikeouts, 10 hits and five earned runs. King threw one inning in relief and fanned three.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 when it travels to Adelphi for a doubleheader against the Panthers. Game time in Garden City, N.Y. is set for 3 p.m.
After their final road trip of the season, UNH closes out its regular season with a pair of non-conference home doubleheaders against LIU Post on Thursday, April 24 and Dominican on Sunday, April 27.
