Chargers Earn Road Split at NE-10 Divisional Foe Pace

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) homered in each end of the doubleheader as the University of New Haven softball team split a midweek twinbill at Northeast-10 Southwest Division foe Pace on Wednesday afternoon. The host Setters took a 7-4 decision in game one, and the Chargers rebounded with a 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.

After the split, New Haven stands at 16-4 on the season with an 8-2 overall mark in the Northeast-10 and a 5-1 NE-10 Southwest Division mark. Pace moves to 6-15 overall, 5-6 in the NE-10 and 3-4 in divisional play.

Fisher hit a solo shot in game one and smacked a two-run homer in the second game – her third and fourth roundtrippers of the season. Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) hit her NE-10-best fifth home run of the spring as a part of a four-hit, three RBI performance in the twinbill. Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) also drove in a run.

Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) earned the win in the second game with a one-hit shutout. The sophomore allowed a single in the first inning before silencing the Pace bats. She struck out 11 batters in the complete game victory. King, who also took the loss in relief in the day's opening game, now stands at 9-2.

Game 1
The Chargers struck early in the opening game on an RBI single from Couturier to plate Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School). Fisher led off the second inning with a solo homer to run the lead to 2-0.

After the Setters took one back in the bottom of the third, the New Haven responded in kind with a tally in the next half-inning. Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) led off the stanza with a double and, after taking third on a passed ball, raced the final 60 feet on DeLeo's RBI single.

Pace would surge into the lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more in the last of the sixth.

Facing a 7-3 deficit, the Chargers mounted a rally in the top of the seventh. Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) singled to start the offense with one down, and Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) followed with a two-out base-hit. Couturier singled to drive in a run and keep the wheels turning, and Spivey was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, Pace's Caitlin McCann bounced back to strike out the potential go-ahead run and complete the 7-4 win for the Setters.

Game 2
All of the offense in the nightcap came in a span of three New Haven batters in the top of the fourth inning. Couturier launched a solo home run to left field with one out. After Spivey was hit by a pitch, Fisher connected for her second longball of the afternoon to run the score to its eventual final of 3-0.

King's outing was her 10th complete game and fourth shutout of 2014.

New Haven returns to action tomorrow as Northeast-10 Southwest Division action continues at American International. The Chargers and Yellow Jackets will complete their halted game from Saturday, then finish the three-game set with a seven-inning contest in Springfield.
