Chargers Take NE-10 Series Finale at Adelphi, Split Midweek Doubleheader

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team completed a Northeast-10 Southwest Division sweep of Adelphi with a 9-2 victory in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader on Long Island. The Panthers edged out the Chargers in the non-conference nightcap by a score of 2-1.

After the split, New Haven moves to 26-13 overall and 18-8 in the Northeast-10. With a 12-6 mark in the NE-10 Southwest Division, the Chargers have secured at least the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NE-10 Championship. The Blue and Gold can win the Southwest Division and earn the right to host the Championship pending the result of this weekend's series between Le Moyne and Pace.

Adelphi now stands at 22-16 on the season with an 11-8 conference mark. New Haven won both ends of the NE-10 twinbill between the two clubs last Wednesday at the UNH Softball Field.

Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) each drove in three runs in the game one win. Fisher's three RBI came by way of her ninth home run of the season, while Cabral stroked a three-run double.

Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) picked up an RBI in each end of the twin bill, increasing her Northeast-10 leading total to 40 runs batted in this season. Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) totaled three hits apiece in the doubleheader.

In the circle, Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) started both contests, while Cabral providing relief in each game. King, who was the winner in game one, tallied 9.1innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on three eight hits and six walks while striking out eight Panthers. Cabral added four innings out of the bullpen, ceding one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Game 1
In the conference half of the twin bill, two big innings for the Chargers made the difference. New Haven started the scoring in the third frame, with Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) reaching via an error to start the frame. After Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) then legged out a bunt single and, two batters later, Dianno roped an RBI single to stake the Chargers to an early lead. Couturier followed an RBI base-hit of her own and, after Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Cabral tagged a three-run double into the gap in left centerfield to extend the margin to 5-0.

The Blue and Gold broke the contest open in their next trip to the plate. Devlin was hit by a pitch with one out to start the offense rolling, followed by a Dianno single and a Couturier hit-by-pitch. After Spivey lofted a sacrifice fly to plate one run, Fisher delivered the biggest hit of the stanza with a three-run homer as New Haven took a commanding 9-0 lead.

The Panthers would scratch out a pair of runs in the fifth to avoid the eight-run rule, but the lead proved insurmountable as the Chargers completed the sweep of the Northeast-10 portion of the season series with Adelphi by a score of 9-2.

King worked the first 4.1 innings of the opener to earn the win and improve to 14-6. She scattered five hits and one walk that led to two earned runs while striking out three. Cabral completed the outing with 2.2 frames of one-hit, scoreless relief.

Game 2
The Chargers started the scoring in the non-conference nightcap with a run in the top of the first as Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) reached and took second via error to lead off the game, coming home two batters later on a Couturier double.

However, New Haven would not cross the plate again as Adelphi tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly and walked off with the 2-1 victory on a seventh-inning RBI single.

King started in the circle once again in the second game, ceding one earned run on three hits and five walks in five innings of work. Cabral (12-7) completed the effort with one run on two hits and one walk in 1.1 frames.

New Haven concludes the regular season this week with two non-conference doubleheaders. The Chargers host LIU Post on Thursday and welcome Dominican on Sunday for Senior Day at the UNH Softball Field.
