BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team came up short in both ends on a non-conference, East Region doubleheader to No. 16 nationally-ranked LIU Post on Thursday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field. The Pioneers took the twin bill by scores of 7-3 and 2-1.
Following the two losses, the Chargers fall to 26-15 overall, while LIU Post improves to 38-6.
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) led the offense with a two-run homer, while
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) and
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) each had two hits and an RBI. Devlin's long ball was her sixth of the season, and Couturier's run-scoring single in the first inning of game two improved her Northeast-10-leading total to 41 RBI this spring.
Rounding out the offense in the doubleheader were singles from
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) and
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic).
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) went the distance in the circle in the opening game. King (14-7) was charged with four earned runs while racking up four strikeouts. In the nightcap,
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) took the hard-luck loss due to a pair of unearned runs. She allowed no earned tallies while scattering three hits and four walks and striking out eight batters – including four in one half-inning due to a wild pitch.
The Chargers, slotted No. 4 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region Rankings, conclude the regular season on Sunday, April 27 with a noon doubleheader against visiting Dominican on Senior Day at the UNH Softball Field. New Haven has clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division; information regarding the upcoming NE-10 Championship will be available on NewHavenChargers.com as it is finalized by the conference office.
