Royer Spins Game 1 Gem, Chargers Split Doubleheader at Le Moyne to Claim Season Series

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) fired a complete game, five-hit shutout to lead the University of New Haven baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Le Moyne. The Chargers won the first game of the Northeast-10 Southwest Division doubleheader, 2-0, before falling by a 4-3 count in the nightcap.

After the split, New Haven stands at 19-10 overall, 14-8 in the Northeast-10 and 9-5 in the Southwest Division. The Dolphins move to 15-21 on the season with a 9-8 conference mark and 6-7 divisional tally.

Royer scattered five singles and three walks while striking out seven en route to his second career complete game shutout.

Offensively, four Chargers pounded out three hits apiece on the afternoon and four different hitters recorded an RBI. Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) drove home the runs in the first game, while Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) and Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) each had an RBI in game two.

Game 1 (New Haven 2, Le Moyne 0)
The Chargers got on the board early with a run in the top of the second inning. DeMorais led off the frame with a double and took third on a Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) fly out. Collett followed with a base-hit to push DeMorais across with the first run of the day.

With Royer keeping the Le Moyne bats in check, New Haven added an insurance tally in the eighth. Walraven started the offense with a lead-off single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton). Brendan O'Reilly then singled to put runners on the corners, and DeMorais lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Walraven around the final 90 feet.

Royer completed his dominant performance with a perfect ninth to cap the 2-0 victory.

Collett went 3-for-4 in the opener, while Walraven, O'Reilly and TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) added two hits apiece.

Ryan Davis (1-8) was saddled with the loss for Le Moyne. The southpaw was charged with both earned runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four.

Game 2 (Le Moyne 4, New Haven 3)
Buckley moved from third base to the mound in the nightcap, making his first career start on the bump. The right-hander was staked to an early advantage with two runs in the second. He helped his own cause with a leadoff single, then Collett was hit by a pitch and Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) walked to load the bases. After one out, an error on a potential inning-ending double play ball allowed two runners to race home and put New Haven on top, 2-0.

The margin held into the sixth inning, when one offensive outburst from the host Dolphins proved to be decisive. Pat Wright hit a three-run homer to put Le Moyne on top, and Donato DiNorcia added an RBI single to extend the Dolphins' lead to 4-2.

The Chargers cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh, as Cullen doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on Walraven's RBI infield hit. However, New Haven would draw no closer as the 4-3 loss stood up as the final score.

Buckley, who moved to designated hitter after leaving the pitcher's mound, went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Cullen added two hits.

As a hurler, Buckley (0-1) was charged with two earned runs in 5.2 innings of the work. He struck out a pair and did not issue a walk. Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) completed the effort with 2.1 frames of scoreless relief.

Damien Powers (4-1) went the distance for Le Moyne. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Following the Sunday split, the Chargers claimed the season series from Le Moyne, two games to one. Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) tossed his first career complete game to guide New Haven to a 5-1 win in Saturday's series opener.

The Blue and Gold wrap-up another NE-10 Southwest Division series on Tuesday, April 29 with a trip to crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. First pitch of the rubber match between the Chargers and Owls is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Ballpark at SCSU.
