Seniors Lead Chargers in Sunday Sweep of Dominican

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven finished out its regular season in strong fashion by sweeping Dominican, 4-0 and 6-2, on Senior Day. UNH moved to 28-15 overall and Dominican dropped to 18-25.

GAME ONE
The Blue and Gold took the lead in the second inning as Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) hit a one-out triple to centerfield followed by a two-out RBI off the bat of Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock).

Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) singled in the bottom half of the second and then motored to third on a throwing error. Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) followed up with a RBI groundout to second.

That was all the offense that starting pitcher Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) need as the righty carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Cabral (13-8) scatted three hits in the complete game shutout, walking three and striking out four.

New Haven tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning. DeLeo lifted the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for her second career home run. Dianno then reached on a bunt single and Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional) followed with an RBI double to left center.

GAME TWO
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) reached on a one-out single in the second before Cabral nailed a RBI double to start the scoring.

UNH would do most of its damage in the bottom of the third as Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) walked and Dianno again reached on an infield bunt single. Couturier hammered a 2-1 fastball over the fence in right centerfield, making it 4-0. The roundtripper was the senior's 11th of the season.

The Blue and Gold finished its scoring in the fourth. Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) drew a leadoff walk and Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) reached on a bunt single. Dianno then smacked a two-out, two RBI single into right field.

Starting pitcher Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) would yield a single run in the fifth and sixth innings, but kept Dominican at bay with a complete-game five-hitter to move to 15-7. The sophomore walked two and struck out six.

The Blue and Gold were led by their four seniors, Chamoff, Couturier, Dianno and Fishers, as they combined for 12 hits, six RBI and six runs. Dianno went 5-for-7 with 2 RBI and three runs scored. Chamoff finished 3-for-5 with one run. Couturier was 2-for-5 at the dish with a homer, four RBI and a run and Fisher finished 2-for-6 with a run.
