Chargers Top Bloomfield, 3-1, in Non-Conference Tilt

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven returned to the win column on Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 triumph over visiting Bloomfield. Derek Drag (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt / Central Conn. St.) worked seven strong innings on the mound to lead a solid performance by four Charger hurlers.

New Haven improves to 5-6 after the non-conference, East Region win. Bloomfield drops to 5-12.

Drag (1-1) earned the win on the mound after scattering four hits and two walks that led to one earned run in seven innings of work. The right-hander struck out seven batters en route to victory. Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) pitched around a leadoff single to post a scoreless eighth, and the tandem of Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) and Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) combined for a perfect ninth. Lewicki retired the lone batter he faced to record his first save of the spring.

Offensively, Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) went 2-for-4 one day after a 3-for-4 showing against Southern Connecticut State. Lewicki, Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush), Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) and Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) each singled to round out the Chargers' six hits. Buckley also stole two bases, while Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton), DeMorais and Tammaro each swiped one bag.

New Haven did not record an RBI in the game, but took advantage of three Bloomfield errors as well as 12 walks and four wild pitches.

The Chargers plated the game's first two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Buckley started the frame with an infield hit and reached second on an errant throw by Bloomfield pitcher Paul Chong. He promptly stole third and then raced home on a throwing error by the Deacons' catcher on the steal attempt.

Johnson kept the offense going with a walk and DeMorais followed with a single. After a double steal, Chong uncorked a wild pitch that scored Johnson to run the margin to 2-0.

After Bloomfield got on the board in the fifth, the Chargers took that run back in the bottom of the sixth frame. Tammaro legged out an infield single and took second on the throw, the advanced to third on a wild pitch. A passed ball accounted for the final 90 feet as Tammaro capped the scoring at 3-1.

Chong (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Bloomfield. The southpaw went the first five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, nine walks and two wild pitches.

Due to unplayable field conditions in northern New England, the Chargers will remain at Frank Vieira Field for a pair of Northeast-10 doubleheaders. New Haven hosts Saint Michael's on Saturday and Saint Anselm on Sunday with first pitch of both twinbills slated for noon.
