Simone Blanks Pace, Johnson Drives in Three Runs in 8-0 Triumph

BOX SCORE PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Senior left-hander Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) spun a six-hit shutout as the University of New Haven baseball team shutout host Pace, 8-0, in Northeast-10 Southwest Division action on Wednesday afternoon. Andrew Johnson (Branford, Conn./Branford / Wheaton) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the Chargers' hitting corps.

With the victory, New Haven improves to 9-8 overall and evens its NE-10 mark at 6-6. The Setters drop to 6-14 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Simone's performance on the bump was his first complete game of the season and the second complete game shutout of his career. The southpaw scattered six singles, only allowing a runner in scoring position in one inning, and did not issue a walk while collecting five strikeouts. Simone (3-1) retired the first 10 Setters that he faced.

Offensively, Johnson added one run scored to his 3-for-4 showing with three RBI. Kyle Cullen was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) each drove in one run for the Chargers. Winner of four of its last five games, New Haven has scored at least seven runs in each contest during that stretch, averaging 9.6 tallies per outing.

After both Simone and Pace starter Tim Deegan cruised through four frames, the Chargers broke through with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Johnson roped a two-run single in the inning in addition to RBI from Cullen, Tammaro and DeMorais. DeMorais recorded two hits in the stanza as New Haven sent 11 batters to plate en route to a 6-0 advantage.

The Chargers would add two more in the sixth inning, started by back-to-back walks to Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) and TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue). Cullen followed with a double to play one run, and Johnson's infield pushed across the final tally of the day to cap the scoring at 8-0.

New Haven returns to the diamond on Sunday, April 13 for a non-conference, East Region doubleheader against Concordia. First pitch from Frank Vieira Field is set for noon. Nortrheast-10 Southwest Division action resumes on Tuesday, April 15 for a 3:30 p.m. contest at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State.
