BOX SCORE MANCHESTER, N.H. – A five-run top of the second inning proved to be the difference as the University of New Haven baseball team was eliminated from Northeast-10 Championship Weekend on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 loss to Adelphi.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) slugged a solo home run in the loss.
The Chargers, who likely needed at least one win at Northeast-10 Championship Weekend to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason, conclude their spring at 23-13. Adelphi, which advances to a second elimination game later this evening on Southern New Hampshire's Penmen Field, improves to 23-22.
Collett's roundtripper was his fourth of the season and cemented his place as the Chargers' RBi leader for the 2014 campaign with 34.
Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) also knocked in a run – his 32nd of the spring – as a part of a 2-for-3 day in his collegiate finale.
The loss on the bump went to senior
John Melville (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston). The right-hander (4-3) tossed the first 1.2 innings of work, ceding five runs (two earned) on six hits and no walks. Southpaw
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) posted 5.1 scoreless innings of relief to keep the Chargers in striking distance, and
Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) finished off the effort, hanging two zeroes in the final appearance of his career.
The win went to Adelphi's Matt Abramowitz, who scattered two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters his eight innings. John Donnelly earned his sixth save with a perfect ninth frame.
The Panthers' jumped out in the front with five runs – include three unearned – in the top of the second inning. With Aprea keeping Adelphi off the board from that point forward, Collett put the Chargers in the scoring column in the fifth frame with a solo homer.
New Haven cut the deficit to three runs with a tally in the bottom of the sixth.
Robert Petrillo Jr. (Branford, Conn./Branford) led off with a single and moved to into scoring position on an infield hit from
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush). After Petrillo claimed third on a double play groundball, DeMorais belted a double to the gap in right centerfield to close the gap to 5-2.
However, neither team would score again as the 5-2 tally in favor of the Panthers held up as final.
The Chargers will graduate nine seniors from the roster this spring. First Team All-Northeast-10 honoree Collett and NE-10 co-Rookie of the Year Walraven head the list of returners for Head Coach Chris Celano.
