BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven softball team ended its 2014 season on Saturday, dropping a 2-1 contest to Wilmington in NCAA Division II East Regional action. With the loss, the Chargers finish the spring at 29-18 overall, while the Wildcats improved to 29-25 with the victory.
Seniors
Lindsey Couturier (Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth Regional),
Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) and
Meghan Chamoff (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Herricks) collected the three Charger hits on the afternoon. Couturier had the lone RBI on a seventh inning home run.
Couturier's homer was the 200th hit of her career as she joined
Nicole Downs (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) (224) and
Breanne Gleason (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central ) (204) as the third Charger in program history in the 200-hit club. The roundtripper also tied Downs (12) for the single-season program record.
Couturier and Fisher combined to smash 22 home runs this season, the most by a duo in the program's existence.
The Wildcats ended a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning. After
Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) yielded back-to-back singles to start the frame.
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) entered in relief and walked the first batter she faced to load the bags. Consecutive RBI groundouts plated Wilmington's runs.
Cabral was able to hold the Wildcats in check from that point forward, giving New Haven a chance for a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Couturier led off the inning with her 12th home run of the season, cutting the deficit in half. Fisher followed with a single to centerfield and was replaced by pinch runner
Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida).
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Williams to second base.
Brandy Dianno (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) drew a two out walk before Stephanie Sarris struck out the final batter of the game to give the 2-1 win to the Wildcats.
King (15-9) suffered the loss, going three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Cabral finished the game, yielding a hit while fanning five.
The Chargers are slated to graduate four seniors in Chamoff, Couturier, Dianno and Fisher. All Northeast-10 Conference honorees King, Cabral and
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) headline the returners for New Haven next season.
Wilmington's season came to a close in the following game with a 1-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire. The Penmen and No. 20 LIU Post will play for a spot in the East Super Regional tomorrow afternoon at the UNH Softball Field beginning at 1 p.m.
