BOX SCORE GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven was on the short end of a 4-3 decision in 12 innings on Friday afternoon at Adelphi.
Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) launched his fourth home run of the season for the Chargers in the Northeast-10 Southwest Division contest.
Â
After the extra-inning defeat, New Haven stands at 20-11 overall and 10-6 in the NE-10 Southwest. Adelphi improves to 21-19 with a 9-7 divisional mark. The Chargers need a split of tomorrow's doubleheader with the Panthers to clinch a home game in the upcoming NE-10 Championship First Round.
Â
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) led the offense with a 4-for-6 day at the plate, including a double. Buckley's roundtripper was one of two hits for the Chargers' third baseman.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) also claimed drove in a run.
Â
Left-hander
Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) started on the mound and did not factor into the decision after eight innings of work. The senior southpaw allowed three earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three. Despite being tagged with the loss,
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) was strong in relief for 3.1 innings. The freshman lefty allowed one earned runs on two hits and two walks (one intentional) with a pair of strikeouts. Aprea falls to 3-1.
Â
Matt Abramowitz (3-2) earned the win in relief. He fired 4.2 perfect innings for the Panthers, striking out seven of the 14 batters he faced. The right-hander entered a 3-3 game with the bases loaded in top of the eighth with one out and registered consecutive strikeouts to escape the jam.
Â
The Panthers started the scoring in the bottom of the second on Robert Vani's RBI single before the Chargers struck to tie the game in their ensuing trip to the dish.
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off the frame with a triple, and raced the final 90 feet on Tammaro's RBI groundout to knot the contest at 1-1.
Â
New Haven pushed into the lead in the top of the fourth. Buckley legged out a bunt single to start the frame and came all the way around to score on Collett's RBI double down the left field line. With Simone keeping the Panthers' bats at bay, the Chargers added to their lead when Buckley led off the sixth with his team-high fourth homer of the spring.
Â
In the home half of the sixth, pinch-hitter Alex Zykoff hit a two-out, two-run home run for Adelphi to tie the score at 3-3.
Â
New Haven had the best chance to break the deadlock late in the game with the bases loaded and one out before Abramowitz entered from the bullpen and shutdown the Chargers' bats. Adelphi never threatened against Aprea until the 12th inning. The Panthers put runners on the corners with one out and, after an intentional walk, Kevin Hutzelm delivered the game-winner to push the hosts to a 4-3 win.
Â
The series and the regular season concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Details surrounding the Chargers' Northeast-10 Championship First Round destination and opponent will be available on NewHavenChargers.com as they are finalized by the conference office.
