Softball Suffers 4-0 Loss to SNHU in NE-10 Championship Game

BOX SCORE WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team suffered a 4-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire University in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at the UNH Softball Field. The game marked the Chargers' second championship appearance in as many years.

New Haven drops to 29-16 on the season, while SNHU improves to to 29-13 overall.

The Chargers' starting pitcher, Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra University) suffered the loss, going five and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and two walks. She gave up eight hits and three earned runs. Nicole King (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) entered in relief and threw the final one and one-third innings. She struck out a pair and held the Penmen hitless.

Penmen starter and NE-10 Pitcher of the Year, Ali Maloof recorded her fourth no-hitter of the season in her 19th victory. She fanned 11 Chargers and walked three on her way to being named the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Most Outstanding Player.

New Haven registered just three base runners in the game. Leadoff Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School), cleanup Jess Spivey (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) and catcher Brooke Fisher (Erial, N.J./Camden Catholic) each reached via walk.

A pitching duel early, Cabral and Maloof held their opponents scoreless through five full innings. The Penmen had runners on base in each of the first three innings, while UNH managed one base runner in the bottom of the second when Fisher reached on a six-pitch walk.

In the bottom of the fifth, New Haven recorded its best opportunity with a leadoff walk from Spivey. Fisher then put down a sacrifice bunt to advance pinch runner Erika Williams (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) into scoring position. Back-to-back strikeouts by Maloof got the Penmen out of the inning still tied at 0-0.

Southern New Hampshire scored all four of its runs in the top of the sixth with four hits and one UNH error. Pinch hitter Davan Rabidou laced the game-winner two-RBI single up the middle of the field on a 3-1 pitch. Another SNHU single and a error at the plate on the next two batters plated two more.

With two out in the bottom of the sixth, Devlin earned her base with a seven-pitch walk, but Maloof's 10th strikeout of the game retired the side.

Either team had base runners in the seventh as a called third strike concluded the game.

New Haven's Cabral and Couturier were named to the All-Championship Team. They were joined SNHU's Maloof, Rabidou and Katie Caruso. Adelphi's Niki Barbato and Saint Anselm's Emily Crannell rounded out the squad.
