Chargers Storm Back for Five Set Win at Saint Anselm

Manchester, N.H. – After falling behind 2-0, the University of New Haven volleyball team stormed back to defeat Saint Anselm 3-2 (20-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-9, 15-2) for a second-straight road victory on Sunday afternoon. Leading the Chargers was junior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 14 kills and a .355 hitting average. With the victory, New Haven improves to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10.  

As a team, New Haven held Saint Anselm to just 11 points over the final two sets, including outscoring the Hawks 15-2 to win the deciding set. Freshman setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) finished with 37 assists, while adding four kills in marshalling the Chargers offense to the come-back victory. Overall for the match, New Haven finished with a .216 hitting percentage including an impressive .441 average in the four sets (12 kills, 1 error, 25 attempts), while finishing without an error in the fifth set.

Senior Kristine Lee was the only other Charger to finish in double figures adding 12 kills, while also hitting well with a .257 average with three errors in 35 attempts. Graduate middle blocker Micki Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) joined in the hitting efforts with seven kills, while she led the Chargers for the second-straight game with six total blocks.

Defensively, New Haven was led by freshman defensive specialist Brianna Mirmina (Bethany, Conn./Amity Regional) who finished with a career-high 15 digs. In addition to Impellizeri's six blocks, Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) finished with five block assists, all part of 12 total blocks, the second-straight match New Haven has finished with double figure blocks.

The Chargers return to the friendly confines of Charger Gym on Tuesday night for their third match in a four day stretch when they welcome Adelphi to West Haven. New Haven puts an undefeated 8-0 record on its home court on the line with the opening serve set for 7:00 p.m.
