Baseball Falls in Season Opener

SHIRLEY, N.Y. – Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) had two hits and a pair of RBI, but the University of New Haven baseball team was upended by the Dowling Golden Lions 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, Dowling improves to 1-0. New Haven falls to 0-1.

New Haven jumped on the board in the top of the first inning. Walraven walked and advanced to second on a throwing error. He then stole third before Collett drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put the Chargers on top 1-0.

The Golden Lions countered in the bottom of both the first and third innings when a one-out triple and a sac fly scored a single run in each frame, putting Dowling up 2-1.

After the Golden Lions tallied a single run in the fourth, the Chargers fought back in the fifth. With one out, Walraven singled in front of Collett who drove a pitch into the right-centerfield gap to plate Walraven and slice the lead to 3-2. That was as close as New Haven would get, however as Dowling plated a run in the bottom of the fifth to cap the scoring for the game.

Offensively for New Haven, Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) had three hits while Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) had two. Three relievers each tossed a scoreless inning as Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School) did not allow a run during the final third of the game.

Next up for the Chargers is a trip to Palm Beach, Fla. On Saturday, they will play a pair of games taking on Molloy at 11:00 a.m. before facing Palm Beach Atlantic at 6:00 p.m.
