BOX SCORE PALM BEACH, Fla. -
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) had four hits and scored three runs, but the New Haven baseball team was upended 8-6 by the Molloy Lions at the Rinker Sports Complex in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Chargers got off to a good start as in the top of the first,
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Petrillo came up next and singled home Walraven for a 1-0 New Haven lead.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) followed with a single, moving Petrillo to third where he stood when
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) drove him in on a fielders choice to put the Chargers up 2-0.
Molloy took the lead quickly with a single run in the first and two in the second. New Haven battled back in the fourth.
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off with a double and stole third. After a pop out,
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) singled to plate Cullen and tie the game at 3-3. The Lions countered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, keyed by an RBI triple from Albert Alberghina to take a 5-3 edge.
The Chargers once again battled back an inning later. Walraven and Petrillo opened the frame with singles. Collett came up and singled to drive in Walraven before Petrillo scored on a fielding error, tying the game at 5-5. Molloy responded immediately, however, scoring three in the bottom of the fifth to go up 8-5.
New Haven clawed their way back in the seventh as Petrillo led off with a double. Two batters later Riccio singled him home to cut the lead to 8-6. That was as close as the Chargers would get, however, as the Lions bullpen held the Chargers scoreless for the final two innings.
New Haven has little time to rest as it faces Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
