Baseball Scores 11 Runs in Setback Against Palm Beach Atlantic

PALM BEACH, Fla. – The University of New Haven baseball team banged out season-highs with 11 runs and 15 hits, but fell to the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 20-11 on Saturday night.

With the win Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 13-7. New Haven drops to 0-3.

Offensively, Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) led the Chargers, going 4-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) delivered three hits and drove in two runs.

Collett drove in his first run of the game in the fourth inning. With one out Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) walked and advanced to second on a throwing error. Two batters later, Collett plated Walraven with a double down the right field line, to tie the game at 3-3.

Two innings later, the Chargers trailed 11-6 when Collett and TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) singled with one out. After a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, a sac fly from Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) brought home Collett to slice the PBA lead to 11-7. The Sailfish seemed to put the game away in the bottom of the frame, tallying eight runs.

New Haven came out swinging in the top of the seventh. With one out Mike Schweitzer (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) singled, Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) was hit by a pitch and Walraven singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) plated Schweitzer for the first run of the inning. That brought up Collett who deposited his first homer of the season over the left-centerfield fence to make it 19-11.

The Chargers return to action on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. when they will face off against Adelphi in Miami Shores, Fla.
