BOX SCORE 2 GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven softball team opened Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play on Wednesday afternoon as the Chargers were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Adelphi. The Panthers won the opener 4-0 before game two was suspended in the top of the first inning due to rain with New Haven leading 2-0.
With the win, Adelphi improves to 4-11 with a 1-0 record in both NE-10 and Southwest Division play. The Chargers fall to 3-7-1 and are 1-2 in the conference and 0-1 in the Southwest Division.
In game one, the Panthers got out of the gate quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. From there, it was a pitchers' duel as neither
Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn./Miss Porter's School / Hofstra) nor Linsday Mapes allowed a run the remainder of the game. Cabral surrendered just one hit through her final five innings of work.
Offensively,
Jen Palase (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) had two hits for New Haven.
Game two saw the Chargers score a pair of first inning runs as with
Kristine Liptack (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) on second and
Gabby DeLeo (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) on first with two outs,
Julie Devlin (Baldwin, N.Y./Northwood School) doubled to plate both runners.
Tori Schiebe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) walked and
Gilly Childs (Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before rain halted the proceedings. The game will resume from that point at a date and time to be determined.
The Chargers next play on Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at Caldwell beginning at noon.
