Baseball Sweeps Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division Doubleheader from Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven baseball team swept a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader from the Adelphi Panthers, winning game one 3-2 in 12 innings before claiming the second game 5-2 at Bonomo Field on the Adelphi campus.

With the wins, the Chargers are now 4-6 overall with a 2-2 record in the NE-10 and are 2-0 in Southwest Division play. Adelphi falls to 4-9 overall, is 2-3 in conference and 0-3 in the division.

In game one, trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, New Haven sliced into the Panthers lead as Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) doubled to score Tammaro and make it 2-1.

The Chargers knotted things up in the seventh as Russo led off with his second double of the game. Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) followed, reaching on a bunt single, advancing Russo to third. Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) lifted a sac fly to leftfield that was deep enough to plate Russo, tying the contest at 2-2.

Despite baserunners in extra innings for both teams, the game went into the 12th inning still tied at 2-2. Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled to lead off the frame and was sacrificed to second by Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga). Following a walk to Tammaro, Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) singled, bringing home Cullen for the game winning run.

Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, pitching five shutout innings in relief of Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) who surrendered just two runs in seven innings of work. Offensively, New Haven was led by Russo, Cullen and Walraven who had three hits each.

In the second game, New Haven jumped on the board early as O'Reilly singled to center leading off the second. Two batters later, Zagaja cracked his second home run of the season to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. They would extend the advantage in the third as Petrillo led off the inning with a single followed by a double from Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook). TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) followed with a single to score Petrillo and move Collett to third. Cullen capped the scoring for the inning with a fielder's choice to bring home Collett and make it 4-0.

After the Panthers scored a run in the top of the fourth, New Haven answered back immediately as Russo led off the frame with a base on balls. Two batters later, Petrillo singled to move Russo to second. Collett grounded a ball to shortstop, but the throw to second for the force out was errant, allowing Russo to score, extend the Chargers lead to 5-1. Adelphi capped the scoring in the game with a run in the top of the sixth inning.

Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) (2-1) earned the game two win, tossing six innings, allowing two runs and walking just one. Connor Moriarty (Branford, Conn./Branford), Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) and TJ Margiotta (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North) each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to close out the victory with Margiotta earning his first save of the year.

Offensively in game two, New Haven was led by Collett, Petrillo, Riccio and Zagaja who each collected two hits.

The Chargers and Panthers wrap up the three-game series on Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in West Haven, Conn. at Frank Vieira Field.
