Baseball Defeats Pace In Eleventh Inning on Petrillo Walk-Off

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the University of New Haven baseball team won a thrilling Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game against the Pace University Setters 4-3 at Frank Vieira Field on Tuesday afternoon.

With the victory, New Haven is now 8-9 overall, 4-5 in the NE-10 and 4-3 in the Southwest Division. The Setters fall to 15-11 overall with an 8-4 record in conference and are 8-2 in divisional play.

The Chargers got out of the gates well scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings. In the first, Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) singled through the middle and then advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw. Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) came up next and drove a ball to the wall in centerfield for a triple, scoring Walraven for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd). Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) loaded the bases, reaching on an error before a sac fly by Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) brought home Cullen to make it 2-0.

After Pace got a run in the third on a solo homerun, New Haven responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo blast of its own by Collett to restore a two-run lead. The game remained 3-1 until the Setters plated single runs in the sixth and seventh to draw even.

Tied at 3-3 into the 11th inning, the Chargers had the final say as Walraven walked to open the inning and moved to second on a ground out. Following an intentional walk to TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) to set up a double play, Petrillo capped the game with a single to center, bringing home Walraven with the winning run.

Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School) (2-0) got the win, pitching three scoreless innings in relief, striking out six. Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) started and surrendered just two runs in six innings, fanning five.

For the game, Collett, Walraven and Russo each had two hits, with Collett delivering his fourth home run of the season to go along with a pair of RBI.

New Haven is now off until Saturday, April 18 when it travels to Albany, N.Y. to take on Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
