WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Brian Caselli (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) pitched four innings of scoreless, hitless relief as the University of New Haven baseball team rode a five-run fourth inning to a 5-4 Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division victory against the Southern Connecticut State Owls on Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.
With the win, the Chargers are now 10-11 overall, 6-7 in the NE-10 and 6-5 in the Southwest Division. The Owls are 15-17 overall with a 7-9 conference mark and are 6-8 in divisional play.
Trailing 2-0 following a pair of unearned runs in the third, New Haven countered in the bottom of the fourth.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) led off with a double and moved to third on a single by
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue). After a walk by
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) loaded the bases,
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) was hit by a pitch to force in a run and make it 2-1.
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side),
Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) each drew a bases loaded walk to give the Chargers a 4-2 advantage.
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) came up next and delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Tammaro, pushing the lead to 5-2.
Southern Connecticut State responded with two more runs in the fifth, but Caselli came on in the sixth and promptly retired the first six batters he faced. The junior walked the leadoff man in the eighth, but was able to get the final six Owls in order to preserve the win.
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) (2-1) picked up the victory going five innings, striking out six, not allowing an earned run.
Offensively, Walraven, Riccio and
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) each had two hits.
The Chargers are back in action on Thursday, April 23 when they host Queens (N.Y.) in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m.
