WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team posted its highest run output in more than two years as the Chargers downed the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights 16-2 on Thursday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.
With the win, New Haven is now 11-11. Queens falls to 8-19.
The 16 runs that the Chargers scored were their most in a game since April 20, 2013 when they defeated Saint Rose 18-14 in the first game of a doubleheader. They also banged out 19 hits, their most in a contest since April 5, 2014 in the second game of a twinbill against Saint Michael's.
New Haven scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning as
Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) singled and then executed a double steal to move to second and third. After a walk to
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) loaded the bases,
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drove home O'Reilly with a groundout for a 1-0 lead.
After Queens scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Chargers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the frame, collecting six hits while drawing five walks. Keying the frame were RBI singles from Walraven,
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) and
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) as they built a 9-1 lead. The eight runs in the inning were the most since March 23, 2014 against Merrimack.
New Haven pushed across three more runs in the sixth. Russo and Zagaja led off with singles before
Mike Schweitzer (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) tagged a double into left-centerfield, plating both runners to make it 11-1. The next batter up was Eddie Tammaro who laced a double down the rightfield line, scoring Schweitzer to extend the lead to 12-1. Â
The Chargers capped the scoring in the seventh, scoring four more times.
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) and Collett led off with singles before an error by the third baseman off the bat of Cullen allowed Petrillo to score and moved Collett to second. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch and walk to Russo, Zagaja drove home Collett and moved Cullen to third on a sac fly. Pinch-hitter
Dillon Rocha (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) drove in Cullen on a fielder's choice and moved to second on an overthrow by the shortstop. The final run was plated on an RBI single by
Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) on a single to center.
The win went to
Will Aldam (Danbury, Conn./Berkshire School) (1-0) who authored two shutout innings of relief.
Offensively, every member of the New Haven starting lineup had a multi-hit game led by Tammaro who collected three hits. Schweitzer and Cullen each drove in three runs.
The Chargers return to action for a key Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division series against Le Moyne beginning on Saturday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Vieira Field.
