WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team won its third consecutive game, downing the Le Moyne Dolphins 11-5 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup at Frank Vieira Field on Military Appreciation Day Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Chargers are 12-11 overall, 8-7 in the NE-10 and are 7-5 in divisional play. Le Moyne drops to 12-18 and is 5-7 in both conference and the Southwest Division.
For the second straight game, New Haven posted double figures in runs, but rather than one big inning, it scored in seven of its eight trips to the plate. After Le Moyne got on the board with two runs in the top of the first, the Chargers got the runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) doubled to open the frame and came around to score when the throw from left field skipped by the second baseman and rolled away. Later,
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drove home
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) who singled earlier in the frame.
After a scoreless second, Le Moyne scored in the top of the third. New Haven once again responded right away. With O'Reilly on third and
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) on second after a single, a walk and a groundout,
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) singled home O'Reilly to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later,
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) also singled, bringing home Walraven for a 4-3 Chargers lead.
In the fourth, a sac fly from
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) brought home
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) who doubled earlier in the frame. Another run came across in the fifth as one out singles from Petrillo, Cullen and Riccio made it 6-3. New Haven put the game to rest in the seventh, scoring three times, keyed by run-scoring hits from Riccio and Russo.
The win went to
Vincent Aprea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) (4-2) who allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Offensively, every member of the lineup had at least one hit with Riccio and Petrillo each collecting three. Riccio led the way with three RBI while O'Reilly scored three runs.
The two teams conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12:00 p.m. Prior to the game, New Haven will honor Collett, Cullen, O'Reilly and
Joey Royer (Westbrook, Maine/Cheverus) with a Senior Day ceremony beginning at 11:45 a.m. at Frank Vieira Field.   Â
