WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader with the Le Moyne Dolphins on Senior Day on Sunday at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers won the opener 2-1 before dropping game two 6-5 in 13 innings.
The 13-inning game two was the longest game for New Haven since a Northeast-10 Conference playoff game against Umass Lowell that went 15 innings on May 11, 2011.
Â
With the split, the Chargers are now 13-12 overall, 8-8 in the NE-10 and 8-6 in the Southwest Division. Le Moyne is 13-19 overall with a 6-8 record in both conference and divisional play.
Â
In game one, New Haven scratched across an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning as
Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice by
Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush). Two batters later,
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) drove a ball to the wall in leftfield for a double, plating O'Reilly. In the third, Walraven doubled with one out and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt.
Zach Collett (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) stood in next and drove home Walraven with a single to left to make it 2-0 Chargers.
Â
Le Moyne pushed across an unearned run in the fourth inning. From there, neither pitcher allowed a single run.
David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) (2-4) earned the win for New Haven going seven innings, surrendering just two hits, striking out two and walking none.
Kellen Croce (Middlebury, Conn./Gunnery School) came in to start the eighth and got into a jam, loading the bases on walks, but was able to get out of the frame with the help of a caught stealing before striking out the final batter of the frame. He then went 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Â
Game two was scoreless into the fourth inning before the Chargers broke through. With two out,
Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) hit back-to-back doubles, giving the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead.
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) followed with a single up the middle, plating Riccio to make it 2-0 New Haven.
Â
The Dolphins got on the board with a four-run top half of the sixth inning, but the Chargers responded in the bottom half of the frame. Collett and Petrillo led off with singles and advanced to second and third on a balk. A sacrifice fly by Cullen brought home Collett and Riccio followed with a single to score Petrillo to tie the game at 4-4. On a double by Russo, New Haven waved Riccio around third, but the throw was in time for the second out of the inning.
Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) came up next and bounced a ball back up the middle that was knocked down by the second baseman. On the play, Russo alertly rounded third and beat the throw home to push New Haven on top 5-4.
Â
Le Moyne plated a run in the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. In extra innings, the Dolphins got a run in the 13th to take a 6-5 lead. The Chargers battled back, loading the bases in the bottom of the inning, but were unable to score.
Â
Offensively in the twinbill, Riccio had four hits and two RBI while Petrillo and Walraven had three hits each.
Â
Next up for New Haven is a road game at Pace on Tuesday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Purchase.
