Baseball Upended by No. 1 Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Championship

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team opened up an early lead, but the nationally ranked No. 1 Franklin Pierce Ravens upended the Chargers 6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Frank Vieira Field on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Ravens are now 44-2. New Haven falls to 17-15.

The Chargers started off well, tallying the first run of the game in the second. Kyle Cullen (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) walked to open the frame. Two batters later, Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) doubled down the leftfield line, plating Cullen for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice by Cullen. TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) doubled deep off the wall in left, scoring Petrillo to make it 2-0.

The Ravens scored a run in the fifth before plating five runs in the sixth, keyed by a Matt Walsh grand slam to take a 6-2 advantage.
Offensively in the game Petrillo and Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) had two hits each.

The Chargers will now play Adelphi in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
