Rios' Fourth Triple Double Helps Lead New Haven to Four Set Win at Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y.The University of New Haven volleyball team (9-5, 4-0 NE-10) remains unblemished in the Northeast-10 Conference following a four-set (25-20, 18-25, 26-24, 25-17) road win at Le Moyne on Sunday. The Chargers were led by sophomore setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who compiled her fourth triple double of the season with 10 kills, 24 assists and 17 digs, while hitting a team-best .281 for the match with just one error in 32 attempts.

HIGHLIGHTS

·         New Haven saw its best hitting of the day come in the fourth set when the Chargers suffered just one error in 33 attempts and recorded 14 kills for a .394 average. Overall for the match, the Blue and Gold hit .221 with 58 kills and 20 errors in 172 total attempts.

·         Rios' 10 kills led three players who finished with double figure kills as Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) and Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) combined to lead the team, each finishing with 15 kills, which set a new career-high for Martins. Of the pair, Martins led the way with a .270 hitting average with five errors in 37 attempts.

·         Rounding out the leading hitters was freshman outside Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who finished one kill shy of double figures with nine, while hitting .250 for the match.

·         Rios' 24 assists was tied for the team lead with senior setter Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)), who also chipped in a match-best three service aces. Hacker also finished among the defensive leaders with 10 digs to complete her second double double of the season.

·         Leading the defensive efforts was Rios and freshman libero Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) who each finished with 17 digs, part of five total players who finished in double figures. Joining them and Hacker was Kennelly with 16 defensive stops and Martins who matched Hacker with 10, also completing her first double double of the season.

·         As a team, New Haven combined for eight total blocks in the match, with four different players denying three Dolphin attacks apiece; Kennelly, Martins, Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central).

UP NEXT
The Chargers return to West Haven for the first home conference match since September 24 when they welcome the Saint Rose Golden Knights to Charger Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 18. Opening serve in the NE-10 battle is slated for 7:00 p.m.
