Baseball Falls in Extra Innings to LIU Post

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team scored seven runs from the sixth through eighth innings, but LIU Post scratched across a run in the top of the 10th as the Pioneers upended the Chargers 8-7 at Frank Vieira Field on Friday afternoon. The win improves LIU Post to 8-8 while New Haven is now 4-8.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the sixth, the Chargers started their comeback as singles by Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) plus a walk to Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) loaded the bases. Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Grzenda. After a walk to Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic) reloaded the bases, TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) came through with a sac fly to score Russo, slicing the lead to 5-2.

In the seventh, New Haven pulled closer as Alex Palmieri (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a Grzenda single. Two batters later, Perrelli singled before Petrillo reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Zagaja came up next and drove a ball into the right-centerfield gap for a bases clearing double, giving the Blue and Gold a 6-5 lead. An inning later, Russo doubled with one out and was brought home by a Perrelli single, extending the advantage to 7-5. The Pioneers would have the final say, however, scoring two runs in the ninth and one in the tenth to pull out of the victory.

Offensively, Russo and Perrelli had three hits each with Perrelli driving in a run. Grzenda had two hits.

New Haven is scheduled to play next on Sunday, March 20 when it will face Concordia (N.Y.) in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch from Frank Vieira Field is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
