Offense Erupts as Baseball Beats Bloomfield

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team delivered season-highs with 13 runs and 14 hits as the Chargers defeated the Bloomfield Bears 13-2 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, New Haven is now 5-8. Bloomfield is 3-12.

Key Players

·          Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) pitched a career-high seven innings allowing one run and striking out eight as he improved his record to 1-1 on the season.

·          TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had three hits including a triple and drove in three runs.

·           Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) and Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) each had two hits.

·          Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) reached base three times and stole three bases.

·           Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) had three RBI.

How it Happened

·          Caico did not allow a hit through the first six innings and gave up just one baserunner during the span.

·          New Haven broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fourth inning. Keying the frame was a two-run triple from Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic).

·          After scoring two more runs in the fourth, the Chargers plated four more runs in the fifth as a Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) triple scored Tammaro. Three batters later, Petrillo singled home Grzenda and Russo, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame. Zagaja drove in the final run of the inning on a groundout.

Turning Point
The big blow in the game came early. With the Chargers leading 1-0, Zagaja rocketed a ball into the left-centerfield gap, scoring two runs and putting New Haven up 3-0. Caico took care of the rest during the best start to date of his collegiate career.

By the Numbers

·          Every member of the New Haven starting lineup had at least one hit.

·           It was a day of firsts as James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) collected his first collegiate hit. Josh Walker (Otisville, N.Y./Minisink Valley) delivered the first RBI of his college career in his first at-bat since he was a senior in high school in 2013.

·         The Chargers racked up season-highs with 13 runs and 14 hits.

·          The Blue and Gold had three triples in the game. It was the first time the team has accomplished that feat since March 11, 2014 against Dowling.
