WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team got three scoreless innings each from
David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and
Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)), but the Chargers were upended by the Dominican Chargers 3-2 in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
New Haven got on the board right away as
Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and moved to third on a double by Nick Perelli.
Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) came up next and grounded a ball to shortstop, scoring Russo for a 1-0 lead for the Blue and Gold. New Haven added to the lead in the third as with two outs Petrillo singled and stole second before coming in to score on a
TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) single. Â
Â
Dominican responded with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 3-2 edge. The Blue and Gold had opportunities in both the fifth and sixth innings, putting multiple runners on, but some sterling defense allowed Dominican to escape both times.
Â
Both teams got outstanding relief pitching in the late innings as Caico and Corey Pic put up zeroes for their respective teams for three innings each to hold the one-run game before Kraigen Rasella pitched the ninth for his second save of the year.
Â
Palmer started and threw three scoreless innings for New Haven, allowing one hit and striking out three. Caico closed with three shutout innings and four strikeouts.
Â
The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they host Dowling in a doubleheader at Frank Vieira Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
