Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with the Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won game one 7-2 before falling 5-4 in the second game. New Haven is now 9-11 overall and is 4-3 in the NE-10.
 
Key Players:
  • Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) had five hits between the two games. After going 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in the opener, he went 1-for-4 in the second game. By getting a hit in both contests, he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
  • Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) went 2-for-4 and had a stolen base in both games.
  • David Palmer (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) picked up the game one victory, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs and striking out seven.
  • Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks in the opener.
 
How it Happened (Game One):
  • The Chargers scored a run in the top of the first inning when back-to-back singles by Russo and Petrillo, combined with an error on the Greyhounds' centerfielder plated the opening run of the game.
  • Back-to-back doubles by Perrelli and Petrillo with two outs scored a single run in the third.
  • After scoring a run in the fifth, New Haven manufactured a pair of runs in the sixth with PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) scoring on a passed ball and a double by Russo bringing home Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford). Contreras and Garcia had singled earlier in the frame, making it 5-0.
  • Assumption scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Blue and Gold got single runs each in the seventh and eighth to seal the game.
 
How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Assumption built a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh with a run in the first and two in the third.
  • The Chargers scored a run in the seventh on an Eddie Tammaro (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) sac fly to bring home Petrillo.
  • The Greyhounds got the run back in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
  • A pair of errors put two runners on base for New Haven in the ninth. A Contreras infield single plated Petrillo. Two batters later, a single by Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass./Worcester (MA)) scored TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Contreras, tying the game at 4-4.
  • Assumption scored in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with the win.
 
Turning Point (Game One):

After Assumption scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get on the board, New Haven responded by putting up insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to seal the win.
 
Turning Point (Game Two):

The Chargers tied the game with three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Greyhounds walked off with the win on an RBI double.
