WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven baseball team rallied from an early deficit and then held on in the ninth to defeat the Pace University Setters 3-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game on Wednesday afternoon. With the win New Haven is now 15-19 and 8-11 in conference play.
Key Players:
- Luke Foster (Stonington, Conn./Stonington) pitched a career-long eight innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs.
- Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Nick Russo (Shirley, N.Y./William Floyd) had two hits and reached base three times.
- TJ Riccio (Port Jeff Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn./Branford) each drove in a run.
How it Happened:
- Pace scored the opening run of the game in the first inning.
- The Blue and Gold tallied all three of its runs in the third. With two out and Nick Perrelli (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) on first, Petrillo doubled to centerfield, scoring Perrelli to tie the game. After a walk to Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic), a Riccio single plated Petrillo. Garcia followed with a double, bringing home Zagaja to make it 3-1.
- The Setters scored a run in the eighth to pull to 3-2.
- Pace loaded the bases in the ninth with two out before Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) struck out Garrett De Lotto on a full count to preserve the win.
