OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (6-4, 2-0 NE-10) dropped its first five set match of the season on Wednesday night, falling to the NYIT Bears 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 12-15. Leading the Chargers was senior outside hitter Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with a season-high 17 kills while junior middle blocker Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) finished with 11 kills and a career-high 10 blocks.
HIGHLIGHTS
· Kennelly's season-high 17 kills is the fourth straight and sixth match of the season she has finished in double figures. She also led the Chargers with a season-best 22 digs and has now finished with double figure digs in all six matches that she has finished with 10 or more kills.
· Freshman outside hitter Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) finished her second straight match with double figure kills, putting down 12 total in the match. The rookie also led the team with a .400 hitting average suffering two errors in 25 total attempts.
· Rounding out the leading hitters was junior middle blocker Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who finished her third match of the year in double figures with 11 kills, while blocking a career-high 10 Bears attacks, leading to her first career double double.
· Sophomore setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) led UNH with 24 assists while adding seven kills to her credit. She also completed a double double adding 16 digs with this match breaking a streak of two straight matches with a triple double. Rios also finished with three blocks.
· Joining Rios in marshalling the Chargers offense was senior setter Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) who finished with 22 assists to go along with eight digs.
· Defensively, Kennelly's 22 digs led three Chargers who finished with double figures. She was joined by Rios' 16 and freshman Charlie Crews who added 18 in her first match back on the court. Crews also added seven assists to her credit.

The Chargers continue a stretch of three straight matches on the road with another non-conference battle against fellow Nutmeg State rival Bridgeport. Opening serve against the Purple Knights is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 6.
