WALTHAM, Mass. – The only undefeated team remaining in the Northeast-10 Conference, the University of New Haven volleyball team improved to 7-0 in league play with a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) of Bentley on Thursday evening. Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was senior Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who finished just shy of a 50-percent hitting effort with an impressive 22 kills.
Her 22 kills is the third time this season she has finished with 20 or more. Overall, the 22 kills came on 41 attempts with a pair of miscues, all leading to a .488 hitting average. She also added eight digs to her credit.
Joining her in leading the hitting efforts was freshman kali Greathead and junior Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who finished with nine and eight kills, respectively. Rios finished the match second on the team with a .333 hitting average with a pair of errors in 18 attempts while also leading the offense with 29 assists. Freshman Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) added 14 assists.
As a team, New Haven's offense connected on 28.7 percent of their attacks, with a combined 49 kills among six total hitters. The Blue and Gold also finished with three service aces, all coming from different players.
Defensively, junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) led the team with 15 digs, one of three players to finish in double figures. Greathead followed her with a dozen, while sophomore Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) chipped in a career-high 10. The Chargers also combined for nine total blocks, led by Nowicki and senior Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who each finished with five. Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) added three putbacks, while Greathead rounded out the efforts with a pair.
The Chargers will return to action in under 48 hours when they close out a two-match road swing with a visit to the Franklin Pierce Ravens on Saturday. Opening serve from Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse is slated for 5:00 p.m.
