Volleyball Sweeps Bridgeport in Final Non-Conference Match of the Season

WEST HAVEN, Conn. –
Behind a game-high 13 kills from senior outside hitter Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil), the University of New Haven women's volleyball team defeated Nutmeg State rival Bridgeport in a straight-set sweep (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) on Thursday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the sweep, New Haven improves to 16-7 on the season as they close out their non-conference schedule.

Martin's 13 kills represented the only player in the match to finish in double figures as she closed out the night hitting .423 with a pair of errors in 26 total attacks. Joining her in leading the offensive charge was junior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef), sophomore right side Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and freshman outside hitter Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who all finished with seven kills each.

Among all the leading hitters, Martins led the way with her .423 hitting average, while Rios finished just behind her with a .400 average, suffering just one error in 15 attacks. Overall as a team, the Blue and Gold combined for 44 kills and finished with a .212 attack percentage.

Rios captained New Haven's offense with 26 assists, while she was joined in the six-two offense by freshman setter Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) who finished with nine kills while junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) added seven. Rios also added a pair of service aces, while New Haven as a team finished with six total. Leading the way was Kim with three.

Defensively, New Haven was led by Kim who was one of two players in double figures with 14 digs. Joining her was Rios with 11. Additionally, New Haven closed out the night with five blocks, led by senior middle blocker Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) who finished with three, while Nowicki chipped in a pair.

The Chargers return to Northeast-10 Conference action with four matches remaining in the regular season, including the next two in the friendly confines of Charger Gymnasium. First on the slate will be the Pace Setters on Tuesday, October 31 for a Halloween VolleyBooo match. All fans who wear a costume to the match are eligible to win prizes. First serve against the Setters is slated for 7:00 p.m.
