Chargers Win 13th Straight, Take Down Pace in Straight Sets

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women's volleyball team (17-7, 11-0) continued its unbeaten streak in the Northeast-10, defeating the visiting Pace Setters in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-14) on Halloween night at Charger Gymnasium. Leading the Chargers on the night was senior outside hitter Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who led all hitters in the match with 12 kills, the only player in double figures.

Martins 12 kills came on a .281 hitting average as she finished with three errors in 32 attempts. Joining her in leading the Blue and Gold was sophomore right side Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) who finished with nine kills and senior middle blocker Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) who tagged eight kills. Among the trio, Bussey led all New Haven hitters as she finished without an error in 19 attempts for a .421 average.

As a team, New Haven finished the match with a .277 attack percentage with a combined 43 kills and 10 errors in 119 attempts. Joining Bussey in a clean hitting night was junior setter Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) who finished with six kills in 23 attacks for a .261 average. Rios also led New Haven with 28 assists and was the defensive leader on the night with 17 digs.

The Chargers also combined for a season-high 12 service aces as a team, led by Martins and junior Briana Mirmina who each finished with four. Overall, five different players all finished with an unreturned serve on the evening.

Rios was one of three Chargers in double figures defensively as she was joined by freshman Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) with a dozen digs, while junior libero Lindsey Kim (Rye Brook, N.Y./Blind Brook) finished with 11 defensive stops. New Haven also combined for four total blocks, led by senior Fernanda Da Silva who was a part of three of the four.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, November 4 as it closes out its regular season home schedule with a visit from the Southern New Hampshire Penmen. Prior to the 1:00 p.m. first serve at Charger Gym, the Chargers will honor five seniors; Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central), Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil), Fernanda Da Silva and Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)).
